Former Homa Bay governor Cyprian Awiti has dismissed circulating rumours about his health and alleged death, reassuring the public that he is in good condition.
Speculation about Awiti's wellbeing emerged after his prolonged absence from public and political engagements.
Social media users claimed the former governor was either critically ill or had passed away.
Awiti’s personal assistant, Allan Onyango, confirmed that the 72-year-old is “very healthy” and enjoying his retirement.
He attributed the absence from public life to Awiti’s choice to rest after decades of service.
“The governor is fit, okay, and kicking,” Onyango said.
“He is simply taking a break after years of dedicated service. He has no plans to return to politics and prefers spending time with his family and grandchildren.”
George Otieno, a former Kasipul parliamentary aspirant and radio host, also confirmed Awiti’s wellbeing, stating that he had spoken to the former governor recently.
“I saw some people type RIP. The governor is okay. I spoke with him yesterday, and he is upbeat and keeping well,” Otieno said.
Onyango further addressed questions about Awiti’s absence from the funeral of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
He explained that the mourning period is still ongoing, noting that according to Luo tradition, leaders of Raila’s stature are mourned for 40 days or more.
During this period, community members continue to console the family, sing favourite songs, and honor the late leader’s legacy.
Awiti’s decision to stay away, Onyango emphasized, reflects his desire for personal rest rather than any health concern.
After decades of public service, Awiti remains focused on his retirement, maintaining a quiet life while reassuring supporters of his health and wellbeing.
