Luhya activist and comedian Nuru Okanga paid a heartfelt visit to Maurice Ogeta, the long-time personal bodyguard of the late Raila Odinga, at his home in Siaya County.
The meeting took place under the warm December sun and was shared widely on social media, capturing the close bond between the two men.
Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, in India at the age of 80.
He was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya, after a state funeral attended by thousands. Ogeta served Odinga for more than two decades and was more than a guard.
He was a trusted companion who remained by Odinga’s side until his last moments.
Videos from the funeral showed him walking beside the casket, tears on his face, reflecting his deep loyalty.
Okanga arrived unannounced at Ogeta’s compound dressed in his white embroidered kitenge.
The two men greeted each other warmly with a handshake and shared laughter and embraces.
Okanga brought a live chicken as a gift, honoring Luo traditions and symbolizing respect and care.
The gesture echoed his earlier visit to Odinga’s gravesite in November where he brought poultry as tribute to Odinga’s family.
Ogeta now focuses on his family and legacy. He has allocated one-bedroom apartments from a building gifted by Odinga to his family members.
His paramedic training remains a quiet reminder of the efforts he made to save Odinga in India.
The visit highlighted the respect and camaraderie between the two men. It also served as a reminder of Odinga’s lasting influence on his allies and supporters.
Okanga and Ogeta discussed ways to continue honoring Odinga’s vision, supporting his pan-African ideas, and navigating Kenya’s political scene after his passing.
