" Prepare for Heavy Rainfall," Kenya Met Warns Kenyans of Upcoming Heavy Rainfall

Kenya Met has warned that the March to May long rains are expected to bring heavy and above-normal rainfall across much of the country.

Authorities say this season could significantly impact communities if preparation is not done in time.

The meteorological department has forecast particularly intense rains in central and western Kenya.

Farmers and residents in these regions are advised to safeguard crops, livestock, and property against potential flooding.

Kenya Met emphasized that even areas not traditionally prone to flooding may experience localized waterlogging. Roads, bridges, and low-lying settlements could be at risk if heavy rains persist over consecutive days.

The department also noted that arid and semi-arid counties, while expecting rainfall, may still face water shortages.

Communities in Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa are urged to manage existing water resources carefully while preparing for intermittent heavy showers.

Authorities recommend that residents clear drainage channels and reinforce riverbanks where possible.

Early warnings and alerts from Kenya Met should be closely monitored to prevent avoidable damage and accidents.

Schools and public institutions are advised to assess their infrastructure for flood risk. Emergency response plans should be activated, including evacuation routes and temporary shelters for at-risk communities.

Kenya Met further cautioned that heavy rainfall could trigger landslides in hilly regions. County governments are called upon to inspect slopes and identify vulnerable areas before the onset of the rains.

Residents are encouraged to secure livestock and store food supplies safely. The department stressed that preparation now will reduce losses and protect livelihoods during the peak of the long rains.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi reiterated the importance of community readiness. He urged both government agencies and local residents to act promptly to mitigate the impact of the heavy rains.

With careful planning and timely response, the expected long rains could bring relief rather than destruction. Kenya Met continues to provide updates to guide communities through this critical season.
