A family from Kiambu County is counting heavy losses after their vehicle was set on fire by protesters during Monday’s demonstrations over rising fuel prices.
The incident happened in Githurai as protests broke out in several parts of the country following the latest fuel price increase announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority.
According to the vehicle owner, identified as Priscilla, her husband had travelled to Kamakis to purchase construction materials when he encountered violent protesters along the busy road.
She explained that they had not expected the demonstrations to turn chaotic because they had initially been described as peaceful protests against the high cost of fuel and transport.
However, the situation reportedly changed after protesters noticed campaign materials linked to the ruling United Democratic Alliance inside the vehicle.
Priscilla claimed the angry demonstrators became hostile after spotting the materials, eventually setting the vehicle ablaze as her husband escaped moments before the fire spread.
The woman revealed that the campaign materials belonged to her because she intends to contest for a Member of County Assembly seat in future elections.
Despite the terrifying experience, she expressed relief that her husband escaped unharmed during the attack.
She added that the incident left the family traumatized and uncertain about the extent of the damage caused to the vehicle.
According to Priscilla, the matter was reported at Kasarani Police Station as investigations into the incident begin.
The destruction occurred amid widespread protests in different towns over the sharp increase in fuel prices, which has sparked anger among many Kenyans already struggling with the rising cost of living.
The latest demonstrations have seen cases of vandalism, clashes with police, and disruption of transport services in several areas.
Residents and leaders have continued calling for calm while urging protesters to avoid destruction of private property during demonstrations.
