UDA Senator Asks Ruto to Fire Governor Sakaja & Hire NMS to Take Over Nairobi County Leadership

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has stirred a heated political debate after calling on President William Ruto to dissolve Nairobi County Government and reinstate the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) to take charge of Kenya’s capital city.

The outspoken UDA legislator argued that Governor Johnson Sakaja has failed in managing Nairobi, accusing his administration of inefficiency, corruption, and poor service delivery.

Speaking on Thursday, Sen. Cherargei stated that Nairobi the country’s political and economic heartbeat has sunk into mismanagement under Sakaja’s leadership.

He said the city’s infrastructure, waste management systems, and public services have deteriorated significantly, undermining the image of Kenya as a modern and globally competitive capital.

“Nairobi County should be handed over to NMS; haiwork. The governor has failed in managing the city,” Cherargei said.

The senator’s remarks have reignited memories of the 2020 period when former President Uhuru Kenyatta established NMS under the leadership of Major General Mohamed Badi.

The agency was credited with restoring some semblance of order in Nairobi through infrastructural projects, better coordination of city services, and improved sanitation. Sen. Cherargei believes a similar intervention is now urgently required to save Nairobi from what he termed administrative collapse.

According to the senator, residents of Nairobi are increasingly dissatisfied with the current county leadership, citing rampant garbage accumulation, traffic congestion, and unfulfilled campaign promises.

He accused Johnson Sakaja of being more focused on public relations than actual governance, warning that Nairobi’s decline poses a national embarrassment.

Political analysts view Cherargei’s statement as both a policy critique and a reflection of growing internal tensions within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Governor Johnson Sakaja, despite being a member of the ruling coalition, has faced criticism from within for his perceived detachment from grassroots realities and his strained relationship with the national government.

But even as pressure mounts, all eyes are now on President Ruto and the Ministry of Devolution to see whether Sen. Cherargei’s call will inspire a broader discussion on the future of Nairobi’s governance.
