As the clock ticks towards the next general election, the race to State House is shaping up into a battle between President William Ruto and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka.
Dr Ruto is facing the biggest test of his political career in his quest for a second term in office with his rival keen to make him the first one-term President in Kenya's history.
Having already lost former Prime Minister Raila Odinga who recently passed on aged 80, the President is facing an uphill task.
Though there is a general assumption that Raila's strongholds will automatically vote for Ruto in 2027, this is not guaranteed. As such, the contest will go to the wire.
So far a good number of counties are emerging as battlegrounds in the rece for numbers in 2027.
These counties will determine if Dr Ruto earns a second term in office or whether the opposition will carry the day.
Though Bungoma is the home turf of the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, but the emergence of Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya could spoil the party for Ruto there.
Going forward, it is most likely that whoever wins in these eight counties could have an advantage in the race to State House.
