The award was presented during the extension of Jamhuri Day celebrations on Friday, December 12, 2025, acknowledging Odemba’s exceptional leadership and her strategic success in guiding the Harambee Starlets to qualification for the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2026).
This marks Kenya’s first appearance in the tournament since 2016, ending a nine-year absence from Africa’s premier women’s football championship.
Odemba’s tactical expertise and ability to galvanise her squad were evident throughout the qualification campaign.
The Starlets delivered impressive performances, securing aggregate victories over Tunisia and Gambia in the final rounds of qualifying matches.
In October 2025, Kenya triumphed with a 4-1 aggregate win over Gambia, a result that secured their place in WAFCON 2026, which will be hosted in Morocco.
Since her appointment as head coach in September 2023, Odemba has transformed the team into a competitive force on the continental stage.
Her coaching philosophy, which emphasises discipline, unity, and tactical intelligence, has not only enhanced team performance but also instilled renewed confidence in Kenyan women’s football.
Beyond her national team duties, Odemba has made significant contributions at the domestic level. She led Kenya Police Bullets to an unbeaten season and a top-flight league title in the Kenya Women’s Premier League.
She also oversees the U-20 national women’s team, the Rising Starlets, mentoring young talent and fostering a pipeline for future national team players.
Odemba’s impact extends to youth development and grassroots football, where her dedication has inspired a new generation of female footballers.
Her achievements were previously recognised when she was named Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Coach of the Month for October 2025, further cementing her reputation as a leading figure in Kenyan sport.
The Moran of the Burning Spear is one of Kenya’s highest national honours, awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service and dedication to the nation.
Odemba’s recognition highlights not only her contribution to sports but also the growing importance and visibility of women’s football in Kenya.
President Ruto praised Odemba’s accomplishments, noting that her success elevates national pride and showcases Kenya’s talent on the continental stage.
“Her leadership has not only brought the Harambee Starlets back to WAFCON but has also inspired countless young Kenyans to pursue excellence in sports,” he said during the award ceremony.
Looking ahead, Odemba and her squad are focused on preparing for WAFCON 2026, aiming to compete strongly against Africa’s best teams.
With the national award adding to their momentum, the Harambee Starlets hope to continue building on their recent successes and solidify Kenya’s reputation in women’s football.
