A family in Gatundu, Kiambu County, is in deep sorrow after losing their loved one, Peter Kagoni, in a tragic accident in Mlolongo.
The 40-year-old man, who worked as a driver and a kamagera (loader), died instantly after the back door of a truck fell on him while he was offloading ballast.
According to his brother, Henry Githuka, Peter was offloading some ballast to reduce the truck’s weight before passing through the weighbridge.
Unfortunately, as he tried to open the back door, it suddenly dropped and trapped him, killing him on the spot.
“We still do not understand how it happened. The truck’s back door fell on him as he was using a spade to offload the ballast. He died instantly,” Henry said painfully.
The heartbreaking news spread quickly online after a photo showing Kagoni trapped under the heavy door went viral.
Family members and friends were shocked by the image, saying it was too painful to look at. Henry said his brother was a hardworking but humble man who always focused on his job.
“He was quiet, hardworking, and loved his work. It is very sad that his life ended this way,” he added.
The family suspects that the truck’s hydraulic system may have failed. They believe the door was weak and could not hold its weight once opened. Police officers are still investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of the accident.
The tragic accident has left the community in Mlolongo shaken. Many Kenyans expressed their sadness online, sending messages of comfort to the family. One person wrote, “Poleni sana, this is very painful.”
Another added, “Hydraulic failure might have caused this, very sad.”
As the family prepares for Peter’s burial, they continue to seek answers about what went wrong.
They have called for proper checks on trucks and loading equipment to prevent such accidents from happening again.
Peter’s death comes just days after another road accident in Kiambu where a lorry crashed onto a hardware store’s roof, killing its driver. Residents are now urging transport companies to prioritize safety to avoid losing more lives.
The late Peter Kagoni will be remembered as a hardworking man who died while trying to provide for his family.
